Documentaries That Are Better Than Summer Blockbusters
by
Nancy McDonald
I prefer a documentary over any summer blockbuster. It's true. My Netflix queue is rife with them. I get so engrossed with the subjects of the documentary because, well, they're real people. Sometimes documentaries can be just as entertaining as a comedy, or just as heartbreaking as a drama. The best part of watching a documentary is when you think to yourself, "Man, I can't believe that really happened."

High Powered Rocket Boots
by
Michelle Duffy
Thrown forward as one of the greatest self made singer/songwriters of the twentieth century, Elton John was, to most, that geeky, yet overly flamboyant looking guy in 'larger than life' sized spectacles jumping wildly at a piano. Forever set in ebony and ivory along side the likes of Billy Joel and Stevie Wonder, these men were the innovators of the legendary MOR, or as we lesser mortals know it, 'middle-of-the-road' music.

Out On The Wiley Windy Moor...
by
Michelle Duffy
Boldly walking the very male path of art rock, she was self assured and focused to the very last penned note. Studying music, dance and mime, she incorporated these art forms into her every movement both musically and visually. The latter, perhaps fitting her operatic voice, she used visual dress to accentuate her music leaving the viewer mesmerised at such a performance of dance as well as voice. Her creativeness was originally inspired by her love of all that was the occult and the supernatural. Collaborating with her passion for classic literature, she chose to use classical heroines for the themes of her earlier songs. Theatrical epics were what she actually produced, probably wasted on the general buying public at the time, she managed to touch a chord and drew into her a still and very attentive audience.

Rock And Rubber Mallets
by
Michelle Duffy
Thunderous, thrashy and somewhat Alice In Chains tinted, the band, visually, can only be described as The Beastie Boys meets the Myth busters, or perhaps even Adam Sandlers lost cousins, yet there is something disturbingly appealing about these guys with their shaved heads and Scooby Doo tee shirts. They reflect a certain mood within all teenagers, but perhaps mostly towards kids in the U.S. Sniggering still at their farts and whistling at girls, it is not difficult to imagine that these fellas, loaded and famous as they are, still ring old ladies door bells in the middle of the night and run away laughing.

The Beginnings Of Peckham's Most Successful Failure
by
Michelle Duffy
First shown on the 8th of September 1981 at 8.30pm on BBC1, the very first episode of 'Only Fools And Horses,' appeared unknowingly onto our screens. From the glamour of Morecambe and Wise and even the theatrical perfection of'Ain't 'Arf Hot Mum,' we found our eyes being filled with all the glitz of a council flat in Peckham. How little we knew that this squalor of unemployment and deceit, several minutes from the ground, in a block referred to as 'Nelson Mandela House,' would be set in stone in out hearts for all eternity.

The Ides of March
by
Dan Stevens
Movie Reviews this week looks at the George Clooney produced and directed The Ides of March, starring George Clooney (Ocean's 11) and Ryan Gosling (Half Nelson) as Stephen Meyers and Governor Mike Morris respectively. It tells the story of the Democratic primaries to find out who will lead the Democratic party in the soon to be held presidential elections, but as the William Shakespeare's play Julius Caesar inspired title hints at, the focus of the movie is on the background incidents involving the media spin doctors, who mainly represent Governor Morris, Stephen Meyers and Paul Zara played by the always impressive Philip Seymour Hoffman (Charlie Wilson's War).

These shorts made a long enjoyable feature at this year's Seattle Gay and Lesbian Film Festival. They're very powerful, compelling, uplifting, and entertaining. The shortest time is 8 minutes and the longest one is 21 minutes. The Producers, Directors, and Actor were in attendance and answered questions after the premiere of this classic and well polished shorts that are a welcome in the gay community.
