Ngorongoro Highlands Walking Adventure
by
Ian Williamson
The journey is a long but beautiful passage through dramatic, harsh territory. Making this an outstanding destination for walking safaris. Walking in the African Bush with Maasai Warriors as you guides is a unique opportunity for spectacular game viewing combined with the prospect to experience cultural encounters amongst the Maasai, Datoga, and nomadic Bushmen.

The Wonderful Lake Natron
by
Dickson A Wambugu
Lake Natron is found in Tanzania and it's very close to the Kenyan border. It's a salt water lake that is located on the eastern side of the Great Rift Valley. The lake is fed by a river known as Ewaso Ng'iro and mineral rich hot springs that drain down the lake. The area around the land is usually very hot and temperature can rise up to 500C. During such times a lot of evaporation occurs due to the high levels of salts and other minerals.

Lake Malawi

Lake Malawi is one of African Great Lakes and the third largest in Africa. It's the eighth largest lake in the world and it's located in Malawi, Mozambique and Tanzania. It's the second deepest lake in Africa and it's a habitat for more aquatic life like fishes than any other water body on the earth. In most countries it's referred to as Lake Nyasa or Lake Niassa especially in Mozambique. The lake also has its basis from the Great Rift Valley where most African water bodies in Africa draw their source.

There are many lakes in Tanzania each one presenting something different to the visitor. Lake Manyara and Lake Natron, are soda lakes where wildlife gather on the desolate salt flats and the shimmering views are often referred to as lunar landscaped, the sunset plunges this landscape into haunting shades of muted pastels. The soda lakes are home to large populations of pink flamingos, storks, and herons.

Lake Magadi In Kenya
by
Jackline Mwathe
Lake Magadi lies in the Southern part of Masai Mara. It is the world second largest source of sodium carbonate. This lake has a thick crust of soda carbonate which is removed using a floating dredge. It is then pumped to refineries, where it is then processed into soda ash which is used in glass making.

Paddling in Caustic Mud
by
Zahid Ameer
Lake Natron in northern Tanzania is no ordinary lake. As the African Sun beats down on it, water is evaporated far more quickly than any rain can replace it. The lake is replenished by springs as well as rain, but these add a strong solution of sodium carbonate (the basis of household washing soda).

Walking Across Ngorongoro and Tanzania's National Parks
by
Ian Williamson
As these treks have become popular several alternatives are now available: the first is to relax at the shady Ngare Sero Campsite and visit Lake Natron itself. The temperatures here can often exceed 40 degrees C - few animals can survive here and here the flamingo has become adept to the harsh conditions and has made the lake its home, nesting on the salty surface on mounds where slightly cooler air prevents the eggs becoming hard boiled.
