The Hispanic Celebration Dia De Los Muertos
by
Matthew Lipshultz
Looking for a Spanish cultural event to celebrate in the month of November? Well you picked a good month because November 1 and 2 are the days to celebrate Dia de los Muertos or, in English, Day of the Dead. Interestingly enough, Dia de los Muertos did not originate as a Spanish celebration.

Los Dias De Los Muertos and the History of the Skeleton
by
Ryan Sachs
The prominent theme during the Days of the Dead (Los dias de los muertos) celebrations is the variety of whimsical skeletons that adorn the towns and cities. While the skulls have a pre-Hispanic history, the skeletons do not.

by
Dianne Mark
Dia de los Muertos, Day of the Dead, is a solemn, joyous, respectful, and humorous holiday celebrated in Mexico to reunite the living with the deceased. Day of the Dead has it's origins in indigenous Aztec beliefs. Families gather at gravesites to recollect the lives of their loved ones, clean and decorate the graves, and share food.

Difference Between Halloween and Day of the Dead
by
Pame Acosta
Imagery of skulls, death, and spirits point to the same holidays, but these images do not conjure up the same feelings for these two very distinct looks at death. Although the two - Halloween and Day of the Dead - are observed during the same season, there are some key differences between the two.

Acquainted With the Night: Documentary Film Review
by
Alvin Starkman
This is a review of feature-length documentary Acquainted with the Night (Markham Streets Films, 2010). The film takes the viewer to seven countries to help to understand night-time traditions, examining how humanity explores, embraces and attempts to protect the night. Using excellent cinematography, and editorial juxtaposition, the movie looks at the universality of curiosity and the quest to learn, ritual celebration, fear and adaptation, and from a Western research perspective the concern for the night's adverse impact on the individual and society.

Day of the Dead - And My Sister Sees Them
by
Suzette Standring
A Mexican fall holiday in origin, Day of the Dead or Dia de los Muertos reminds us that death is a natural and unavoidable rite of passage and a time to remember ancestors. I am also reminded that my sister Christine sees dead people.

Honor the Dead With Bread
by
Gigi Gaggero
In Mexico, there is a ritual known as Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead. The ritual is celebrated in Mexico and now many parts of the United States. Huge celebrations are held each year at a loved one's grave site honoring them, usually expressed with elaborate temporary alters of flowers shaped into extraordinary huge arches that will contain a picture of the deceased. The whole grave site will be freshly repainted, and several hundred candles might be set up, and the family will prepare elaborate foods for the deceased!
